A universal joint is a mechanical device that allows one or more rotating shafts to be linked together, allowing the transmission of torque or rotary motion. Rim and Face alignment method are oldest method used for universal joint alignment. Two dial indicators are used to determine the relative position of movable shaft with respect to stationary universal joint. The rim dial indicator is used to measure offset in one plane along the shaft length and face dial indicator is used to measure angularity or slope between the shaft.
Straight Edge method involves placing the straight edge on the pump and coupling, then visually checking to see if the components are aligned. Feeler gauges are used to measure the gap at the top and bottom of the universal joint. Straight edge is the least accurate and least likely to achieve manufacturer's alignment specifications. It's usually used for small pump or motor combinations that don't allow enough room to use more accurate methods.
Laser alignment is the most accurate method available. This method employs state-of-the-art lasers to determine universal joint’s positions. It then relates this information to the computer, allowing very precise recommendations for adjustments. While more expensive, laser alignment offers significant advantages over time, and initial costs can be offset by reduced friction and energy use, lower levels of vibration and noise and longer lasting bearings, seals, universal joint.
Before installing the universal joint, first check whether the prime mover and the working machine are concentric, and whether there is wrapping paper or scratches on the surfaces of the two shafts. Whether there is debris in the inner holes of the two half couplings of the universal coupling. Whether there are bruises on the edges of the inner holes, if any, clean the shaft and half couplings, and treat the bruises with a fine file.
Then check whether the inner hole diameter and length of the two half couplings of the universal joint are consistent with the diameter and shaft elongation of the prime mover and working machine. In general selection, it is better to make the length of the prime mover and the working machine end half-coupling less than its shaft elongation 10-30mm.
In order to facilitate the installation, it is best to put the two half couplings in the insulation box or oil tank for preheating, so that the inner hole size is enlarged and it is easy to install. After installation, ensure that the shaft head cannot protrude from the end face of the half coupling, and it is better to be flush. Detect the distance between the two halves of the coupling, and take the average of the 34 points measured along the two inner sides of the flange of the half of the coupling, and the sum of the lengthened section and the measured dimensions of the two diaphragm sets. The error of the two should be controlled within the range of 0-04mm.
For alignment of universal joint, a dial indicator should be used to detect the runout of the flange end face and outer circle of the two halves of the coupling flange. When the flange outer circle is less than 250mm, the runout value should not exceed 5mm; when the flange outer circle is greater than 250mm, the runout value should not exceed 8mm.
To install the bolts, you need to insert the bolts from the outside of the small hole of the flange, and pass through the outside of the large hole of the other flange, put on the buffer sleeve, elastic washer, and twist the nut. Use a wrench to tighten the nut. If the installation is unsuitable or if it is removed and replaced, it does not damage the shaft and half coupling. It is better to rotate freely after installation. Before starting the equipment, check whether the nut of the plum coupling is loose or falling off. If so, tighten the nut with a wrench in time. The equipment should be started without load for 1 minute before the load pipeline valve is opened; the shutdown sequence is reversed. If installation, maintenance, operation are carried out according to the instructions and requirements, the number of daily starts of the universal joint is 15 times.
Replacing universal joints refers to changing the couplings at both ends of the drive shaft, which are part of the vehicle suspension system. This process is not complicated, so anyone can complete the maintenance task by themselves.
Dislodge the fill plug for the transmission. Prepare a container for the fluid and disengage the transmission's drain plug.
Ensure the integrity of the driveshaft assembly by creating reference marks.
Detach the mounting clips or bolts which hold the driveshaft to the transmission. Remove the driveshaft by dislodging the yoke from the transmission. Prevent the jostling of the needle bearings by securing the bearing caps with tape. Stabilize the driveshaft in a vise. Remove the tape. Dislodge the bearings from the yoke by detaching the retaining rings.
Use variously sized sockets along with the leverage supplied by the vise, to force the bearing caps from the yoke. Use pliers to remove the caps as they are pushed through the assembly. Flip the drive shaft around in the vise and repeat the preceding process on the other end.
Dislodge the universal joint from the both the yoke and the driveshaft. Remove all dirt and debris from the entire drive shaft assembly, assuring that it is completely clean. Apply a small amount of grease to the replacement caps. Replace the bearing cap by inserting it partially into the yoke. Begin installing the universal joint into the cap. Insert the opposing cap partially. Line up the universal joint and push the caps into place using a press machine.
Insert the retaining rings. Lift the driveshaft into position. Confirm that the yoke is properly aligned with the shaft of the transmission. Consult your reference lines to ensure proper reinstallation of the driveshaft. Reattach the universal joint mounting clamps or clips. Insert the grease fitting and apply grease. Inspect the universal joint to confirm proper installation.
